1. About Me

A number of years ago, when I was single and living in the city, I decided to act on a longtime dream and buy a cabin in the country. I envisioned the cabin as a peaceful retreat from the stress and tumult of life as an urban thirtysomething—a place for quiet walks, for lounging in a hammock, for long runs on wooded trails. Then, on one of my first weekends at the cabin, bears appeared on the property, foraging for insects by flipping immense rocks with their claws.

The bears initially thrilled me and my girlfriend (now my wife), but then the bears appeared again and again, and soon we began to view the situation as our “bear problem.” I’ve learned a lot since then—and seen a lot of bears. And this website is, in some ways, part of an ongoing effort to come to terms with living close to bears. It will focus on bear encounters, scholarly work about bears, and other related topics, like suburban (and urban) wildlife, kids and nature, and more.
